Guru Purnima Gujarat Pt 4

Guru Poornima was a resounding success. Here is a look at some more performances from the evening.

Korean Tabla Player/ Kathak dancer Won Joung Jin

Korean Tabla Player/ Kathak dancer Won Joung Jin

She dazzles audiences with her fast chakars and padhant. A native of Korea, Won Joung Jin has been living in India for 10 years and has immersed herself in studying two of India's classical arts - tabla and Kathak dance. She is a professional freelance Kathak dancer and is increasing her presence on the tabla stage. To learn one classical art requires immense dedication and time, to study and practice two arts truly is inspirational. You also can't find many or any female Kathak dancers who can also play tabla. Fantastic job Jin!

Tabla Ecstasy - Tabla Fusion Ensemble

Tālavya (formerlyTabla Ecstasy) L to R: Kaumil Shah, Nishant Mehta, Rushi Vakil, Sahil Patel

They are wowing audiences all over India, but had yet to perform for their own audience - the Rhythm Riders family. The last performance of the wonderful celebration of the largest music Guru Purnima in Gujarat was of Pandit Divyang Vakil's latest group composition, which was composed and debuted in 2008 - Tabla Tālavya. As usual, these tabla players blew the audience away with their syncronization, energy and ease in playing Pandit Divyang Vakil's most difficult group composition to date. The performers - Rushi Vakil, Nishant Mehta, Kaumil Shah and Sahil Patel - have been learning from Guruji for an average of 18 years each.
